ECONOMY LIQUOR
Written By Jenny Johnson Hoffman

I believe it goes without saying (though I am saying it now) that owning a bay or beach house means having to entertain house guests from time to time. Dinner parties, friends over for cocktails, being invited over to neighbor’s homes and sometimes having those overnight guests that just don’t want to leave, is all a part of being fortunate enough to own an island home.

There are certain important items one must have while hosting friends on the island, great music, food on the grill and cocktails are a must. When my husband and I are expecting friends and family at our home, we always drive to Jamaica Beach to the Economy Liquor store for all of our entertaining needs.
We first became familiar with Economy Liquor when one particular weekend we were planning on attending a friend’s 50th birthday party on the island and really wanted to get him a special bottle of wine. We decided that a Cakebread Cellar Cabernet would be the perfect gift.

We chose to stop at our local Spec’s Liquor store by our house in Katy to pick up the wine, believing that we would not have any luck finding it on the island, we were more surprised to find that Spec’s did not have it. We decided to take a chance on the Economy Liquor Store in Jamaica Beach and there it was, along with numerous other upscale bottles of wine.

We met the owner Bob McCurry, as well as his two companions Brandy and Jager (they are Corgi dogs that can always be found laying on the floor inside the store). Every time we stop by Economy Liquor, Bob is always there to greet us with a handshake and always offers to help us select the type of wine we are looking for.

The Jamaica Beach location is one of two Economy Liquor stores on the island. There is also an Economy Liquor located on 23rd Street in Galveston where Bob’s wife Evelyn and son Seth operate that location.

Economy Liquor has a truly outstanding selection of wine, liquor, domestic beer, imported beer, micro beer and cigars that can satisfy any of your entertaining needs. Among just selling great products, they are a wholesaler and retailer, as well as a catering company that services weddings and parties.

Pretty much every weekend my husband and I are on the island, we always stop by Economy Liquor to pick up either a bottle of nice wine, sometimes it’s ingredients for frozen drinks, on occasion we might be in the mood for a good cigar, whatever the reason Economy Liquor is always a great stop.

Economy Liquor in Galveston is located at 1911 23rd Street and they can be reached at 409-763-6091 and the Economy Liquor in Jamaica Beach is located at 16708 San Luis Pass Road in the Jamaica Beach Shopping Center. They can be reached at 409-737-3341. Both locations hours of operation are Monday through Thursday 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. and Friday and Saturday 10 a.m. – 8 p.m. and they are always closed on Sunday.
