WINES FOR THE MONTH
September 2009
Written By Seth McCurry, Economy Liquor

For September
we are highlighting three wonderful reds from all over the world.
The first wine comes from the ever popular island of Sicily. It
is also made from a grape indigenous to the island called Nero D’Avola.
Fuedo Arancio
Nero D’Avola 2007 is a great medium body red that has a perfect
balance of earthiness and fruit. Raspberry and cedar win the competition
of flavors. Great with grilled red meats or even try it with meaty
pizza. With a score of 8.8 it’s priced at $9.49.
The second
wine comes from Argentina and is only available from either island
Economy Liquor locations. It is called Moncagua Malbec 2006 from
Mendoza.
The profile
has tons of dark fruits with a small amount of tannin on the end.
Nice pepper and vanilla linger after the fruits go away. Try this
Malbec with chocolate desert or braised short ribs with polenta.
Priced at $9.99 this red has a score of 9.3.
The last wine
comes from a place a little closer to home. Trentadue is a winery
that has been around since 1969 in Geyserville, California.
This 2005 Zinfandel
from Sonoma County is a blend of 76% Zinfandel, 20% Petite Syrah,
and 4% Syrah. It has intense dark fruit followed by nice spice and
very light tannin.
The wine is
a classic Zinfandel with a perfect balance of flavor and spice.
Grilled burgers or chocolate crème brûlée would
be a perfect meal. It sells for $14.99 and scores a 9.1.
